Folio 152: Jefferyes to Stanhope. Peter Petrowitz 4 year-old only son of the Czar, died on 25 April. 3 princesses survive out of 11 children and it is thought that the Czar will try to have the succession settled on the eldest daughter. Various marriages suggested for her, but the Czar has cast his eye on the prince of Denmark for her but no decisive answer yet given. If the Czar dies before this occurs, and without a male heir, the princesses may be excluded for the son of Alexius Petrowitz, the present great duke of Moscow. The Czar has found a bride of comparative size for a Frenchman of uncommon height and bigness. The king of Prussia's grenadiers are but children in comparison. Dwarfs are to attend them on their wedding-day. Encloses copies in Italian and German of a declaration by the Czar, ordering all Jesuits under the Emperor's protection to leave Russia immediately. Sweden prohibits trade again in Liefland and Finland. In reprisal the Czar prohibits commerce with Sweden. Trade in the Baltic this year is hazardous unless sufficient convoy protects it. The Czar promises the Dutch protection for their merchantmen. Expects similar favour to all others. Dated StPetersburg, 1 May 1719.
