Folio 149: Jefferyes to Stanhope. After conference with ministers here, Danish envoy conveys gist of what Safirov imparts: that commissions with which Lovenorn and Bassewitz were charged and the conditions they proposed to Sweden for promoting a separate peace wereconditionally, that duchy of Sleswig be surrendered to the Danes and other preliminaries. On these the kings of Britain and Denmark are willing to consent to peace. They, with the exclusion of the Czar, are likely to support the duke of Holstein. Evident from discussions with Danish envoy that Sweden is not acting sincerely with us, but serves us in order to have better conditions from the Russians. Duke of Mecklenburg long advised by the Czar to submit to Imperial decree, as HM desires to remain aloof in the matter. Ship of 90 cannon being launched, built by an Englishman called Cozins. Another similar built by the Czar, and commanded by Rear-Admiral Gordon who is lately disgusted with this court as his salary is half what he expected. Told if he wants more to go elsewhere which is known to be impossible, as those in service here are disaffected from king and country, are little better than slaves of this country. Dated StPetersburg, 24 April 1719.
