Folio 103: Jefferyes to Stanhope, Recent reports of a public proclamation by beat of drums for sending various provisions to Voronez because the Turks had declared war against the Russians. All disabused by assurances that the Turks so far from declaring war, werecourting the Czar's friendship even more. Assembly held on the evening of the Czar's arrival from Olonitz at the house of Major-General Jaguzinski. Edict published lately by the college of Commerce forbidding importation of foreign salt into Czar's dominions except Liefland and Finland. Very confused order for which I have asked an explanation. The queen of Sweden has notified this court of the death of the king and her accession. Count Gylenburg has informed General Bruce that she is willing to continue the congress at Aland. The court will take on mourning next Sunday. It appears by many great preparations that the Czar will try to make peace with Sweden. If fair means fail, he will distress them by hindering provisions and perhaps by landing troops. At the congress Lillenstedt is to replace Baron Gortz whose crimes have been paid for by the loss of his political head. Dated St Petersburg, 6 Mar 1718/9.
