Description

Folio 96: Jefferyes to Stanhope. Ministers here surprised at proceedings at court of Vienna. Wesselowski has orders to leave Vienna and Austria in 8 days. Recredentials express nothing against resident personally, but intimiated that the Czar had shown little regard of late for the friendship of the Emperor; which was much resented. The Czar was not afraid of Austrian repercussions but, wanting friendship, desired the Danish Court's intervention. Neglin sent to the Czar to intervene for the young duke of Holstein. No attention given him as he had no credentials and no advantage would acrue to the Czar other than hinderance of Britain in making peace with Sweden. Land and sea preparations under way for the next campaign. Twenty men of war, 150 galleys and 300 vessels for horses and men are ready. The Czar will obtain peace by any means, fair or foul, on his own terms, obliging them to submit by force; at the same time supporting the claims of the margrave of Brandenburg to Courland against the Poles. The deaths are reported of field-marshal Czermetoff and general Lewenhaupt, a Swede, prisoner here since the battle of Poltava. It is rumoured that Brigadier Le Fort will be sent to the court of Great Britain, with secret commissions, accompanied by Capt. Bruce. Cannot verify. Vice-Admiral Creutz still resolved not to serve the Czar any longer and will leave the country and all his many acquisitions. This he hopes will not be necessary if helped by HM Dated St Petersburg, 27 Feb 1718/9.
