Description

Folio 95: MacKenzie to Tilson. Am told the Czar went yesterday to the Swedish Admiral Ehrenshield not only because of his great opinion of him but also to see in what condition he is. The rigors of the season have for the third time opened his wounds. The Czar visits his ship yards daily. 50 smallish vessels, now on the stocks will be ready fitted by May. That totals 132, deducting losses of 18 at Abo. Have seen list of ships which have more that 36 guns, and mostly 50-70. I do not know, if you, who are well provided can understand another's plight at such a distance. My silent load of hardships has so much affected our other foreign ministers that they came the other day to urge me to present a memorial to the Czar about my 6 months endurance of indifferent accommodation. I think I must take their advice. Dated St Petersburg 24 Dec 1714.
