Folio 66: MacKenzie to Townshend. What has transpired since last writing may serve as an excuse for not explaining fully. There will be many varied examples of evidence reaching you, but I can give you my gleamings of these surprising events, reported with patience and without passion and sudden thought. It seems the flour formerly was a rouble a sack, but the Czar was made to pay 2¼ roubles a sack. The meal was a drug in the country, while the soldiers and the inhabitants must pay at pleasure for meal that was unfit for market. We may know in a few days whether the Czar will fine the guilty or give corporal punishment. Mostly it is thought that what may prove Capital to many, is forfeiture of Estate, Chattles, the Czar's favour and afterwards to be confined or exiled. The Czar's reproach is that he gave them all plenty, so that they would be above corruption. He has drawn most information from his private spies. I expect everything will shortly be public. Dated St Petersburg, 29 Nov 1714.
