Japan: Yezo (now Hokkaido). '... from Native Map of portion of the island of Yesso': photographic reproduction of a map showing the route of a journey made by Captain Frederick Brine, Royal Engineers, between Hakodate and the gold mines west of Wari (now Sawara); also showing sleeping-places, tea-houses, roads and tracks; the nature of the terrain, guard houses and customs houses, and anchorages for junks. Reference tables to conventional signs and to distances; reference notes on roads. Scale: 3 inches to 16 miles. MS additions in coloured ink, highlighting Brine's route. Stamped in the Topographical Department, War Office, 12 November 1864. Originally illustrating a report by Captain Brine, 29 June 1864; this report is not filed with the map.
