Has had Washington's whole force outside his works for two days, and the army's sole wish is that the enemy should advance; is pleased at Clinton's letter of the 24th and will at once retire within the works; does not think smoke signals will be as meaningful as sound of cannon, but will attempt smoke signals on Gloucester side.
