Williamsburg. Account of his manoeuvres with Lafayette around the Rappahannock; sent Simcoe and Tarleton to disturb the Assembly at Charlottesville, reports Tarleton's capture of members of Assembly, destruction of stores, Simcoe's attack on von Steuben at Point of Fork; his own movements around Richmond, Hanover, Williamsburg, destruction and capture of stores; notes that Clinton does not agree to use an offensive force in Virginia, but asserts the critical importance of Virginia in the security of the Carolinas; repeats much of the matter of the letter at PRO 30/11/74/13, discusses his imminent moves in Virginia and the best town for a base; various comment on Carolina situation; estimates of Lafayette's strength and intentions.
