Description

Register of the issue of writs of subpoena on the King's Remembrancer's side of the Exchequer. The subpoena was the principal means of securing the appearance of defendants in the Exchequer, both to answer suits in equity and to respond to informations filed on the revenue side. Entries were made by each of the sworn clerks, who entered the name of the suit, recording the plaintiff first, followed by the names of the defendants, and indicated responsibility for process by recording their own name in the left hand margin. The book contains occasional annotations of the filing of the bill. The series originally extended to 1841, but all later books have been destroyed.
