Date
1715-1833
Description

Comprises three series of enrolment books relating to two groups of lands centered on Middlesex, which were dealt with separately during the eighteenth century. The first group of lands are those that made up the Bailiwick of St James, which had been created by Henry VIII out of lands in the parishes of St Margaret, St Martin in the Fields, St Giles in the Fields, Fulham and Chelsea in Middlesex surrendered to him between 1531-1536. The second group of lands are those that belonged to the hospital of Savoy abolished in 1702, both in Middlesex where the hospital was and other counties, mainly Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

There appears to be no apparent reason why the separate series of particulars and leases start in 1715.

Administrative / biographical background

The lands of the hospital of Savoy had only been administered by the Exchequer since 1702 and earlier counterpart leases in the name of the Master and chaplains of the hospital are found amongst the records of the Duchy of Lancaster in DL 47. The earlier history of the Bailiwick of St James is complex, but for most of the seventeenth century it was held in jointure by queens consort, first by Queen Henrietta Maria and then by Catherine of Braganza.
