Description

This series consists of about 350 miscellaneous inventories of goods and chattels. Most are in the form of indentures. A heading, stating the names of the people conducting the inventory, is usually followed by lists of valued goods, room by room. The inventory will usually end with a list of debts or final expenses and total values.

Some of the inventories list agricultural stock and implements or details of shops and other business premises, as well as the more usual clothes, jewellery, furniture and books. There are a few inventories of ecclesiastical institutions and of ships' cargoes.

Many of the inventories relate to people indicted for treason or other felonies. The goods of such people were forfeit to the Crown, and include such famous traitors as Roger Mortimer, earl of March, Sir William Stanley and Sir Edmund Dudley. The majority of the inventories, however, relate to less well known people and there is a high proportion relating to citizens of the City of London.
