Description

This series consists of ecclesiastical documents drawn together from all parts of the Exchequer and from records of other courts housed within the Exchequer. They include archives of religious houses seized at their dissolution, and muniments of private persons which, for whatever reason, had come into the hands of the Crown. Other documents are file strays from recognised administrative series.

The series includes records of the internal administration of individual religious houses or orders, such as proceedings in chapter and records of visitations, as well as documents concerning their endowments, lands, and privileges, including cartularies and other transcripts. There are too a few theological tracts or notes for preachers, which must also be of monastic or religious origin. Other documents relate directly to the process of dissolution and to the pensions granted to former religious.

Other records in the series relate to guilds and chantries; named parish churches; taxation; indulgences; marriage and divorce; advowsons; wills; titles; commissions on fees; and causes heard in ecclesiastical courts or before judges delegate.
