Description

Folio 310: Whitworth to Stanhope. Long conference with Ilgen largely concerning the guarantee of safety of Prussia and the wisdom of alienating the Czar; Whitworth unable to ascertain the success of his commission. Ilgen mentions similar news from Aland of the progress of King George's Peace Treaty as that which Stanhope received from Stockholm: it seems the accommodation with the Czar is on the point of conclusion, although Ilgen feels the Swedes will make offers to various courts before committing themselves. Whitworth's audience with the King of Prussia: Whitworth tells the king of the new disputes due to the building of embankments on the Elbe. The king still intends to sign the treaty: the article for the guarantee of Prussia was necessary to him, and certain British proposals he could not agree with, but suggested he might make a project for a reciprocal arrangement. King's opinion of the necessity for a special clause to allow free passage of communication in the convention regarding the Three Villages, and of action to be taken regarding the embankments being built on the Elbe. Kniphausen offers encouragements after the audience, and proposes a conference with Ilgen and Heusch. From Berlin
