Description

Folio 268: Whitworth to Stanhope. Difficulties in negotiations. Continuation of Muscovite intrigues. Convention regarding the Three Villages. Ilgen gives Heusch the instruments of the treaty and the final versions of the separate articles for examination: some unimportant alterations necessitated a new conference before the articles could be sent to the king. King of Prussia's opinion of the convention, and the reason he had sent it to the Commissariat. Conference with Ilgen and Heusch, and further discussion of the articles. Ilgen reports malevolent parties suggesting to King of Prussia that King George should not be trusted; Tolstoy alarms the king with reports of the treaty recently signed in Vienna. Offer to the King of Prussia by the Muscovites for disposal of their forces. Progress of the negotiations in Aland, and proposals for Revel; Gyllenborg's journey to Stockholm to hear the Queen's final resolution. Whitworth hopes Carteret will keep Stanhope better informed of events. Critical importance of the Convention for the success of the whole venture. Opinion of the Commissariat, influenced by the Prince of Anhalt, and its influence on the Prussian court. Further negotiations between the British and Prussian ministers, and the standing of the king in these negotiations. Whitworth requests instructions. Postscript that Ilgen has not sent the project which he promised Whitworth. From Berlin
