Folio 40: Whitworth to Stanhope. Rothembourg reveals his mission in Berlin to be principally the establishment of friendship between the Kings of France and Prussia: progress of this mission. Prussian intrigues towards a particular peace. Prussian vacillation. Embassy sent to Stockholm to obtain an individual a passport. Schwerin's reported journey to Sweden. Reports of Swedish reaction to Prussian overtures. Ilgen's general willingness to treat with Britain, but objection to the 5th article, in favour of the King of Poland. Prussians alarmed at treaty made between the King as Elector, the Emperor and the King of Poland, suspecting secret articles. Fear of Prussians for the Emperor, and resultant suspicions of British motives, that they might be required to abandon the Congress of Aland. Whitworth tells Golofkin the projects he had revealed to the Prussians; Golofkin seems uneasy since Whitworth's arrival. From Berlin
