Description

Volumes recording appearances by defendants to answer cases brought against them. Each entry gives the name of the defendant, the name of the person at whose suit he was appearing, the type of writ by which his appearance was secured, the return date on the writ, and the date of the entry. Some entries are also annotated with various procedural points.

Appearance books dating from 1716 to 1850, together with another series of appearance books arranged by plaintiffs' names, running from 1728 to 1832, were destroyed under a schedule of 1885.
