Note
Warrants to admit persons to a wide variety of lesser offices under the Crown or to release such offices to their successors. Many of the documents concern bailiwicks, but keepers and justices of the peace, (File 1 no. 1; 2 nos. 2-7.) an usher of the Exchequer, (File 1 no. 15.) a gauger of wines, (File 1 no. 8.) customs officers (File 2 nos. 1, 8.) and various other appointments are also mentioned. Documents concerning sheriffs are of particular interest: two require their intervention in disputed mayoral elections, at Newcastle in 1284 (File 1 no. 3.) and at Lynn in 1411; (File 3 no. 3.) others are directed to the enforcement of statutes which prohibited undersheriffs, sheriff's clerks and subsequently sheriff's bailiffs from holding office for longer than a year at a time. (St. 42 Edward III c.9, & 1 Henry V c.4; cf. file 3 nos. 4, 5, 7, 8, 12-14.) At the end, incomplete and undated, is the oath, in English, of a member of the Staple of Calais. (File 3 no. 18.)
