Title: WOOL CERTIFICATES
Note: These documents are all connected with Edward III's schemes for the use of wool as a political and financial weapon against the French between 1338 and 1342. They include requests for information about the progress of the collection of a half of the wool in England, whose preemption was granted to the King in February 1338, and about the amounts of wool taken from individuals as part of this preemption; they also include requests for information about the collection of the wool of the religious orders and of the higher clergy, who made a similar grant at the same time. A further loan of 20,000 sacks of wool was authorised by parliament in July 1340, and there are requests for information about the progress of the collection in individual counties, and concerning the amounts taken from named individuals. There is also a number of requests for information about the purchase, assignment and sale of wools on the king's behalf during this period; and concerning the amounts of wool exported by individual merchants free of the payment of subsidy or for the payment of a reduced subsidy, as a result of arrangements made with the king. A number of other connected documents are also included.
