This series contains a wide variety of records from the Chancery of Durham. Many of them are of an accounting nature, and there are a number arising from causes. The cursitor's records include a register of recognizances made in Chancery, 1507-1521 and selected writs and returns in cases originating in the exchequer of Pleas or other Westminster courts, Geo II to Victoria. The registrar's records include papers in causes in Chancery, 1634-1824; accounts of official business of the registrar and his deputy, 1720-77; private account books, 1716-94; and petitions, with reports under the Trust or Mortgage Estates Act 1708 and the Infant Trustees and Mortgages Act 1763, for conveyances by infants, 1764-1801.
Records of the registrar after the abolition of the cursitor's office include an enrolment book of deeds, 1879; books of account in Chancery causes, 1881-1918; daily cash books of Chancery receipts and expenditure, 1884-1918; a day-book of official business, 1909-11; and summons and warrant books, 1915-58. Some of the records in the series arise from enclosure awards, and there is also a stray Quarter Sessions file of 1693.
