Files, photographs and plans relating to building work in the various properties owned by the General Nursing Council (GNC).

The files contain information on the maintenance, leases of parts of the properties and the provision of facilities and services such as fire escapes and canteens, as well as correspondence between the GNC, their solicitors and architects. There are also copies of published articles.

The first meeting of the General Nursing Council (GNC) took place in May 1920 in rooms put at their disposal by the Ministry of Health. Premises of their own were found at 12, York Gate, London W1. As the need for increased space was recognised, the GNC moved to 20, Portland Place in 1932. Early in 1935 the GNC agreed to a proposal by the British Broadcasting Corporation to exchange 20 and 22 Portland Place for 23 and 25 Portland Place. Reconstruction work on the buildings began in 1935 and was completed in May 1937. The Adam fireplace and the Cipriani ceiling paintings were saved from the original buildings. The two buildings were reconstructed as one, and the building was opened as 23 Portland Place in June 1937.

Further extensions to GNC property took place in 1945 when 17 Portland Place and Duchess Mews were purchased. Between 1961 and 1962 two additional floors were added to 23 Portland Place and alterations made to existing floors. Premises were leased at 32-36 Great Portland Street for use by a small research unit.
