Administrative / biographical background

The Staveley Machine Tool Project commenced in 1962 with the signing of a contract between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and Staveley Industries Limited, for the development of "a multi-purpose machine for boring, drilling, reaming and milling" (also known as a "universal milling machine"). The project was funded by a grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (later Ministry of Technology) and the work was carried out at the Staveley Research Department (George Richards and Company Limited) at Clapham, Bedfordshire. The project was supervised by a Project Officer based at the National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride, Glasgow, which also carried out tests on samples of milled material submitted to them by Staveley. The contract between Staveley and the DSIR/Mintech was determined in 1967 and the project terminated, after the performance of the completed milling machines was found to be inadequate.
