Description

Administrative / biographical background

Under the Poor Prisoners' Relief Act of 1813 (53 Geo III, c 113), counties were to contribute a sum of money on 1st August each year to maintain poor prisoners in the London debtors' prisons. In order to obtain entitlement to the aid, prisoners were to swear an oath declaring that they were worth no more than £10. The money was then distributed by the prison governor at weekly intervals
