Administrative / biographical background

Overall co-ordination of the Civil Aviation Authority's aircraft type certification activities is performed by the Aircraft Projects Department of the Airworthiness Division and successor. This involves identifying the British Civil Airworthiness Requirements standard for aircraft design, verifying that designs comply with these standards, and issuing type certificates to confirm this. Subsequently the department co-ordinates both the approval of changes to the certificated design standard and investigation into in-service occurrences which may need changes to maintain satisfactory safety levels.
