Administrative / biographical background

The Air Traffic Control Evaluation Unit (ATCEU) is a branch of the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) of the Civil Aviation Authority. It was set up in 1951 as the Air Traffic Control Experimental Unit and assumed its present title in 1962. Before the Civil Aviation Authority was set up in 1972 the Unit formed part of the department of the Director General of Navigational Services of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

ATCEU's functions are to evaluate and develop techniques and equipments for future air traffic systems; to investigate methods of control necessary to cope with ever-increasing air traffic density and aircraft performance; to undertake initial checks of new primary and secondary radar installations; and to collect, record and analyse data concerning aircraft operations into and out of major airports in relation to such aspects as minimum noise routes and flight paths of aircraft over particular localities.
