Administrative / biographical background

The basic task of the Airworthiness Division's Survey Department is to confirm that airworthiness is being achieved. This embraces the physical state of the in-service aircraft, the effectiveness of maintenance and its management and the adequacy of aviation support in the broadest sense.

The department does this by monitoring aircraft manufacturers' activities during all phases of construction to ensure compliance with the approved design. It also surveys imported aircraft, both old and new, for compliance with Type Certificate, UK Special Conditions and other Certification Requirements prior to the issue of a certificate of airworthiness, and monitors aircraft in service through periodic renewals of the certificate of airworthiness and pre-planned surveillance visits.

The department also provides an airworthiness advisory service for foreign governments throughout the world, using surveyors based in overseas offices.
