This series contains records of the West and General Africa Department dealing with issues relating to Commonwealth interests in the whole of Africa, particularly the conflict in the Congo and the relations of the Commonwealth with the apartheid regime in South Africa. The West and General Africa Department of the Commonwealth Relations Office was established in 1964 to handle Commonwealth relations with Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, and matters of general Commonwealth interest relating to Africa as a whole. General Africa questions had previously been dealt with by the UN and General Africa Department.
The department continued with unchanged responsibilities under the Commonwealth Office from August 1966, but its functions were dispersed to various departments in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from October 1968.
