In 1999 Foreign and Commonwealth Office
The Economic General Department was set up in the Commonwealth Relations Office to handle general business relating to economics and trade in the Commonwealth, including relations with international economic organisations, the sterling area and balance of payments issues, and cross-border subjects such as shipping, company registrations, double taxation agreements, international copyright and strategic controls on trade with Communist countries.
These functions had previously been exercised by three different departments: Economic Policy; Commercial Policy; Finance and Development Policy Departments. The Economic General Department continued after the formation of the Commonwealth Office, and was renamed the Commonwealth Trade Department in January 1967.
