Foreign and Commonwealth Office
In August 1962, the West Indies Department was formed as part of the new West Indies and General Division. It dealt with the newly independent states of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, and general Commonwealth interests in the region.
As more Caribbean colonies and British Guiana progressed towards independence, relations with them were also handled by the West Indies Department. In 1964 the department was abolished and its responsibilities passed to the Atlantic Department.
