This series consists of an assortment of papers collected by William Bankes Amery between 1925 and 1931, all relating to the work of the Oversea Settlement Department of the Dominions Office in promoting emigration to Australia in accordance with the terms of the Empire Settlement Act 1922. Includes correspondence with his successor as British Government representative in Australia for migration, E T Crutchley. The letters from Australia, initially from Amery and subsequently from Crutchley, are of interest in the light they shed on problems with the implementation of the measures introduced by the 1922 Act, and on the degree of control exercised in this area by the Treasury.

William Bankes Amery CBE had a long and varied career in government service, beginning as a Customs House clerk in 1905 and ending as a member of the Board of British Phosphate Commissioners, a post which he occupied at the time of his death in 1951. In 1922, Amery joined the Oversea Settlement Department of the Colonial Office as finance officer: this department became part of the newly-formed Dominions Office in 1925.
From 1925 to 1928, Amery served as British Government representative in Australia for migration. He then returned to London as a principal in the Dominions Office, ultimately as assistant secretary, until 1939. Senior appointments followed at the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Food, prior to his joining the Board of British Phosphate Commissioners.
