Administrative / biographical background

The Maldive Islands were under the protection of the British Crown from 1887, from which time relations were conducted through the Governor of Ceylon (from 1948, the High Commissioner). By agreement in 1960 the Maldivian government assumed responsibility for relations with other states in certain fields, and a British High Commission (based in Colombo, Ceylon) was established. The Maldives achieved full independence in 1965.
