Administrative / biographical background

The Southern Africa Department was part of the Africa and General (1959-1960) and the Africa (1960-1961) Divisions of the Commonwealth Relations Office. It handled all aspects of the UK's relations with South Africa while it was part of the Commonwealth, and continued to do so after the Republic of South Africa left the Commonwealth in May 1961. Responsibility was passed to the Foreign Office in December 1961, at which time the Department was abolished.
