Administrative / biographical background

When negotiations conducted by the Lord Privy Seal for Britain's entry into the European Economic Community, Euratom and the European Coal and Steel Community began, it became necessary for the Office to establish a new department to deal with Britains's Commonwealth relations in the light of possible entry into the Common Market. This Common Market Department was established in 1962, and dealt with all aspects of the negotiations, particularly those relating to the question of the treatment of Commonwealth agricultural producers should Britain join the Common Market. After the failure of the entry negotiations in 1963, the Department was wound up.
