The Federation of the West Indies came into being in January 1958. It consisted of Barbados, Jamaica, the Leeward Islands (excluding the Virgin Islands) Trinidad and Tobago, and the Windward Islands. It was dissolved in May 1962, residual functions passing to an Interim Commissioner for the West Indies.
