Administrative / biographical background

The title UK representative to Eire was changed to ambassador in 1949, when the Republic of Ireland ceased to be part of the dominions of the Crown, and withdrew from the Commonwealth. Despite this, UK relations with Ireland continued to be handled by the Commonwealth Relations Office and its successors.
