The order books generally carry an original pagination in ink. Some have a subsequent foliation in pencil, evidently because the original pagination was inadequate: remember, however, that the index references are to the older ink pagination, also that the same name may be entered in the index more than once, as indexers of that time did not arrange names starting with the same letter of the alphabet in strict alphabetical order. For alphabetical indexes to volumes 1 to 17, to July 1655, see SP 24/18-22. These indexes (now IND 1/8899-8903) are consolidated from individual indexes at the end of each order book, though the latter usually include only the plaintiff's name.
