Description

Short Title: Earl of Lonsdale v Wordsworth.

Plaintiff(s): The Rt Hon James [Lowther], Earl of Lonsdale.

Defendant(s): Richard Wordsworth, Christopher Crackenthorpe Cookson.

Depositions for: Plaintiff.

Subject of Depositions: The compensation made by the plaintiff to John Wordsworth for acting as his steward; whether a salary of £100, the use of a messuage or tenement, and the emolument of holding the plaintiff's courts in various manors, is "a very ample a large or more than usually large allowance or benefit to the said John Wordsworth for being and acting as the complainant's steward" according to the custom of the county; the names in Cumberland of the plaintiff's barony of Burgh [Burgh by Sands] and his manors of Aiketon [Aikton], Burgh [Burgh by Sands], Ribton, Dumburgh [Drumburgh], Parton and Mickelthwaite, Stainton, Rockcliffe, Westlinton [or West Linton], Plumpton, Newton Reigny, Threlkeld, Thwaites, Dearham, Clifton, Seaton, and Stainburn, and the manor of the Forest of Ennerdale are mentioned, and reference is made to "relations and friends in the counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland [Westmorland] and parts adjacent".
