Administrative / biographical background

The Hospital of Savoy was founded in 1517 on the site of the old palace of Savoy, which had been destroyed in the Peasants' revolt of 1381. The site had been granted by the Duchy of Lancaster under the Duchy seal on 3 April 1511. the hospital was dissolved in 1553 but was refounded on 3 November 1556. At this foundation the hospital was again endowed with lands to provide for its upkeep. The hospital was finally dissolved in 1702 and thenceforward its lands were administered as part of the land revenues of the crown. The Duchy of Lancaster disputed this, expecially with regard to the land within the preceint of Savoy itself. The question was settled, after a long dispute with the officers of the Land Revenues of the Crown, by an act of Parliament in 1772.
