DL 16
c1558-c1760
The documents in this series result from the Duchy of Lancaster's right of presentation to ecclesiastical benefices throughout its holdings in England and Wales.
The series consists of the draft presentations made in the process of preparing the actual presentation. The drafts are for letters patent of the monarch under the Duchy seal. They are addressed to the ordinary of the area of the living concerned, with the name of the new incumbent.
There is usually a warrant attached to the draft presentation, with details of the name of the living, the county, its annual value, and the value of the tithes.

With the assumption of the throne by Henry IV in 1399, the right of presentation, like the Duchy as a whole, was kept distinct from the royal estate. This right was devolved to and exercised by the Chancellor of the Duchy.
