Description

Short title: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster v Bateman.

Plaintiffs: Attorney General [at the relation of John Shalcross].

Defendants: Robert Bateman, Fearne, Higton, Hambleton and Ball.

Documents: depositions concerning the grinding of corn at Haddon mill, Derbyshire.

Deponents for plaintiffs: John Bradbury of Haddon, miller, aged 58, whose memory goes back 20 years and more [to 1652], deposed that in 1650 he was the miller at Haddon mill of which the plaintiff is now lessee. Deponents for defendants: Thomas Webster of Hope, Staffordshire, husbandman, aged 70, whose memory goes back 60 years [to 1612], deposed that he was born in Haddon and moved away 30 years ago to Hope, 2 miles away; William Shemell of Alport, miller, aged 58, deposed that he became a miller at Middleton-by-Youlgreave in 1641 and stayed until 1644; Thomas Gratton of Bakewell, husbandman, aged 70, whose memory goes back 60 years [to 1612], deposed that he knows the manor of Haddon because he used to live in Biggin around 60 years ago for 2 years and was a shepherd boy when he lived with Thomas Bennet; Matthew Wright of Middleton-by-Youlgreave, husbandman, aged 80, whose memory goes back 60 years [to 1612], deposed that he used to carry corn and grain grown in Haddon to be ground at mills in Berisford, Middleton, Alstonfield and Hopton; Thomas Haywood of Haddon, husbandman, aged 71, whose memory goes back 50 years and more [to 1622], deposed that he has lived all his life in Haddon; John Kent of Biggin, husbandman, aged 61, whose memory goes back 50 years and more, [to 1622], deposed that he has lived all his life in Haddon; John Cottrill of Middleton-by-Youlgreave, aged 65, whose memory goes back 50 years [to 1622], deposed that he left Haddon 14 years ago [1658]; James Howson of Youlgreave, miller, aged 50, deposed that he was miller at Middleton-by-Youlgreave for 7 years until 1653. At that time he ground corn from Haddon and Biggin; George Barsett of Berisford, Staffordshire, miller, aged 68, deposed that his father before him was a miller and that both of them have ground corn from Haddon; Humphrey Rowland of Middleton-by-Youlgreave, miner, aged 68, whose memory goes back 30 years [to 1642], deposed that he has sometimes been a 'dryester' of corn; Richard Philips of Berisford, Staffordshire, husbandman, aged 60; Andrew Slack of Aldwark, miner, aged 70 years and more, whose memory goes back 35 years ago [to 1637], deposed that he lived in Biggin for 2 years from 1637. He was a servant of Mr John Sleigh and when he asked where he should grind the corn he was told that he and his family were not bound to grind their corn at any one mill but was told 'you may go wither you will, or words to that effect'; James Mellow of Monyash, miller, aged 66, whose memory goes back 40 years [to 1632], deposed that he was miller at Middleton-by-Youlgreave for 2 years; William Slater of Middleton-by-Youlgreave, husbandman, aged 47; George Crichlow of Berisford, Staffordshire, husbandman, aged 70 years and more; Stephen Bramley of Berisford, Staffordshire, husbandman, aged 50 years and more; John Sellars of Middleton-by-Youlgreave, miner, aged 59, whose memory goes back 30 years and more [to 1642].
