Description

Short title: Shalcrosse v Stones.

Plaintiffs: John Shalcrosse.

Defendants: Nicholas Stones [and a cross suit Stones v Shalcrosse, Veeters and Hallam].

Documents: depositions concerning the inheritance customs in the King's Forest and the arrangements of credit between smelters and lead miners at Odin's mines, Castleton, Derbyshire.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Edmund Ford of Wirksworth, mercer, aged 40; Ralph Kirk of Castleton, miner, aged 60, [explains the local history of Odin's mines and a supposed memory of Vikings]; Godfrey Bowden of Castleton, miner, aged 50, deposed that Ann Hatlow, widow of Robert Hatlow, inherited 1/3 of his shares in mines on Odin. His 'maister', Ellis Howe, has bought ore from her there at 15 s. per load; Ellis Barber of Mam in Castleton, yeoman, aged 47, whose memory goes back 30 years [to 1639], deposed that Robert Hallom died 28 years ago [1641]. He was a servant of Hallom's from May 1641 and received ore from and paid wages to Hallom's workmen; George Booth of Charlesworth, husbandman, aged 62; Thomas Bradley of Great Hucklow, miner, aged 55; William Nicholson of Bakewell, gentleman, aged 65, [presented with paper verdicts of a trial at the Barmote at which he was steward in 1641 regarding Odin's mine]; Thomas Allen of Tideswell, gentleman, aged 51, [shown verdicts written by his father]; Randall Bredbury of Castleton, miner, aged 50; Robert Eyre of Hope, miner aged 48, [shown a paper from last April regarding the mine]; Mary Eyre, wife of Robert Eyre, aged 40, deposed that she remembers 20 years ago her mother, Ann Haslom, was in dispute regarding Odin's mine; Robert Hall of Castleton, miner, aged 67; John Dronfield of Castleton, miner, aged 40.

Deponents for defendants: Edmund Ford, formerly examined, deposed that he has in his possession a verdict from the High Peak Barmote of 1641; Robert Hill of Stoney Mill, miner, aged 55, whose memory goes back 40 years [to 1629], deposed that 39 years ago he was barmaster in Castleton. He entered records of transactions of mineshares into the barmasters book, but this book was lost during the English Civil Wars; Alice, wife of Robert Dakin of Castleton, miner aged 57, whose memory goes back 40 years [to 1629]; Robert Needham of Castleton, miner, aged 55; William Redfearne of Abney, husbandman, aged 72; Dorothy, wife of John Bramwall, of Castleton, miner, aged 54, whose memory goes back 20 years [to 1649], deposed that she and her sister, Alice Dakin, remember the transfer of property by Anne Hallom. [Describes the productivity of her mine 29 years ago]; Thomas Hadfield of Piner End, miner, aged 46, whose memory goes back 36 years [to 1633]; Richard Charlesworth of Castleton, yeoman, aged 40; Nicholas Howe of Castleton, husbandman, aged 66; Roger Lee of Sheffield, Yorkshire, lead merchant, aged 47, [presented with a paper book of accounts of Castleton mine produced in 1639 and 1640] deposed that the hand of the accounts was that of Richard Stones, who was his master for 7 years; Robert Dakin senior of Castleton, miner, aged 66; John Hall of Castleton, miner, aged 48; Robert Dakin junior of Castleton, miner, aged 36.
