Description

Short title: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster v Gell, otherwise Earl of Northampton v Gell.

Plaintiffs: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster [at the relation of James Compton, Earl of Northampton].

Defendants: John Gell and William Mitchell.

Documents: depositions concerning the possession of lot and cope during the years 1656-1661, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Richard Brook of Derby, gentleman, aged 59; Henry Travis of Brassington, yeoman, aged 28; Humphrey Briddon of Youlgreave, husbandman, aged 3 score and 4 [64 years], deputy barmaster of Middleton-by-Youlgreave; Matthew Wright of Middleton-by-Youlgreave, miner; Henry Greatrex of Bonsall, yeoman, aged 40; John Creswell of Middleton-by-Wirksworth, yeoman, aged 40; Joshua Croft of Wirksworth, yeoman, aged 30; William Creese of Wirksworth, gentleman, aged 29, deposed that he was employed as agent to Earl of Northampton and ordered accounts of deputy barmaster for all of the wapentake of Wirksworth except the Dovegang, Newton Grange and Griffe Grange. 'To the best of this depts remembrance' total production at the mines during the period 26/3/1661- 12/6/1661 was 1921 loads. [Load a measure of lead ore made up of 9 dishes weighing about 5 cwt/hundredweight]. He believes that there was more gotten and measured in the liberty that was not entered in the accounts; Edward Botham of Elton, yeoman, aged 25; Robert Holme senior of Wensley, miner, aged 40; John Knowles of Breechgate, Bonsall, miner, aged 22; William Smedley of Hopton, husbandman, aged 28; Martin Tompson of Wirkswirth, orebuyer, aged 50; Edward Fogg of Wirksworth, yeoman, aged 44.
