Description

Short title: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster v Hartley.

Plaintiffs: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster [at the relation of William Mellor and Richard Buxton].

Defendants: Hartley, Vicars, Shacklocke, Taylor and others.

Documents: depositions concerning the illegal erection of a corn mill on common land in Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

Taken 23 October, 15 Charles I.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Robert Chadwick of Ashleyha, yeoman, aged 76; Germaine Buxton of Bradborne, gentleman, aged 27.

Deponents for defendants: Richard Hulley of Calow, husbandman, aged 58, deposed that the water mill at the south west end of Wirksworth called Ludway Mill or Wirksworth Mill was extended 20 years ago; Henry Twigg of Kirk Ireton, yeoman, aged 40; Ellen Vallanc of Wirksworth, widow, aged 85, deposed that she and her husband did not own a house until 6 years ago. They have worked as badgers [dealers in grain] for 40 years grinding corn at Cromford, Bonsall, Derby, Alton, Alderwasley, Wigwall and New Mill; William Greatrax of Calow, yeoman, aged 72.
