Description

Short title: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster v Steere, otherwise Ferne v Steere.

Plaintiffs: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster [at the relation of Anthony Ferne, Thomas Plant, George Columbell and Anthony Cotterell].

Defendants: Peter Steere, Roger Steere and William Lyme.

Documents: depositions concerning Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

Taken 13 April, 7 Charles I.

Deponents for plaintiffs: [Commission for copyholders Henry Gregson, John Ferne the elder, Henry Spense and Thomas Alsopp, gentleman] Adam Bateman of Matlock, miner, aged around 28, deposed that the vein called Paddock Torr Rake was troubled with water for the last 16 years and could not be drained without engines or pumps. The defendants have been pumping their water into the plaintiff's mines; Thomas Browne of Matlock, miner, aged around 40; Francis Walker of Matlock, miner, aged around 42, deposed that he has known 12 loads got in a fortnight. Ore was 22s per load 5 years ago. [Load a measure of lead ore made up of 9 dishes weighing about 5 cwt/hundredweight]; William Johns of Wirksworth, miner, aged around 52.
