Description

Short title: Ashton v Yeveley.

Plaintiffs: Charles Ashton.

Defendants:Thomas Yeaveley, Wilkinson and Tatton.

Documents: depositions concerning Heyfield Mill and its weir, in the High Peak, Derbyshire.

Taken 17 January, 11 James I.

Deponents for plaintiffs: William Rowlinson of Heyfield, gentleman, aged 40, whose memory goes back 30 years [to 1584], deposed that around 14 years ago George Needham, gentleman, held Heyfield mill and allowed Nicholas Wilkinson to set up an 'ould milne wheele' [old mill wheel] to be used for sharpening knives, scythes etc. known as the cutler's wheel. It was taken down 5 years ago as it did not grind as well when the water was low during summer. About Mayday last 2 inhabitants dug into the stone and took out 60-80 loads to used for building; Thomas Bowden of Heyfield, yeoman; Thomas Miller of Bugsworth, yeoman, aged 67; Richard Shore of Brownside, yeoman, aged 34; John Hurdsfield of Chinley, husbandman, aged 30; Godfrey Bowden of Heyfield, husbandman, aged 50; Randle Hyde of Heyfield, miller, aged 60; John Mount of Ollersett, miller, aged 26.
