Description

Short title: Eyre v Dicken.

Plaintiffs: Rowland Eyre.

Defendants: George Dicken and Henry Dicken.

Documents: depositions concerning Wormhill Mill in Tideswell, and Taddington, Derbyshire.

Taken 11 October, 42 Eliz.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Thomas Wibbersley of Priestcliffe, yeoman, aged 57, whose memory goes back 40 years [to 1560], deposed that the farmers of the mill have always had a monopoly over milling. Recently George Dicken has erected a horse mill at which the tenants grind their corn. In 'tyme past' [time past] tenants have come, and still ought to come, from Medowe, Tunstead, Wormhill, Gretrax, Flay and Chelmorton to grind corn at the official water mill; Dorothy Lies of Priestcliffe, widow, aged 78; Raphe Bredbury of Priestcliffe, yeoman, aged 74, whose memory goes back 50 years [to 1550]; Ottiwell Andrew, of Wormhill, yeoman, aged 60; Robert Buxton of Chelmorton, yeoman, aged 67; Robert Head or Wormhill, yeoman, aged 80; Gervase Torr of Hardwick Wall, yeoman, aged 68; Richard Andrew of Hardwick Wall, husbandman, aged 60; Thomas Jackson of Taddington, yeoman, aged 60; Richard Jackson of Taddington, yeoman, aged 60; Arthur Hewson of Milne houses, miller, aged 50.

Deponents for defendants: Dorothy Daken of Priestcliffe, widow, aged 86; John Johnson of Chelmorton, husbandman, aged 76, deposed that 34 or 35 years ago the freeholders and inhabitants of Taddington and other nearby places ground their corn at blackwall where he was miller because it was cheaper; Roger Wibbersley of Flag, yeoman, aged 72; Thomas Meolson of Priestcliffe, yeoman, aged 40; Robert Innocent of Taddington, yeoman, aged 60; Thomas Daken of Priestcliffe, yeoman, aged 60; Raphe Prne of Taddington, yeoman, aged 50; Christopher Blackwall of Taddington, yeoman, aged 55; Anthony Buxton of Priestcliffe, yeoman, aged 46.
