Description

Short title: Eyre v Browne.

Plaintiffs: Rowland Eyre.

Defendants: Richard Browne.

Documents: depositions concerning payment of cope on mines in the Peak Forest, Derbyshire.

Taken 20 October, 40 Eliz.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Thomas Steare of the Peak Forest, miner, aged 45, was the chief workman on the mine; Henry Pearson of the Peak Forest, aged 50, deposed that he worked for Robert Bagshawe of the Dalehead in summer 12 months ago; Margaret Bradley, wife of George Bradley, of the Peak Forest, aged 42, deposed that lot and tithe had been paid on purchased ore as well as 'the greater ore'. [Lot a mineral duty paid by the miner to the lord of the liberty to search for and mine ore]; William Heawward of the Peak Forest, husbandman, aged 40; Alice Steare, wife of Thomas Steare, of the Peak Forest, deposed that a number of miners and orebuyers in the Peak Forest were avoiding lot and cope. That she and her husband have paid it, 'her husband being a poor man and not able to stand in law against Mr Eyre'; William Pedley of Castleton, wiredrawer, aged 50; Nicholas Bush of Castleton, miner, aged 36; Richard Hill of the Peak Forest, miner, aged 40; Richard Ashdale of Castleton, miner, aged 28; Martin Hallem of Castleton, husbandman, aged 27.
