Description

Short title: Earl of Shrewsbury v Sacheverell.

Plaintiffs: Gilbert [Talbot] Earl of Shrewsbury.

Defendants: Henry Sacheverell and others.

Documents: depositions concerning free mining in Wensley and Snitterton, Derbyshire.

Taken 23 April, 35 Eliz.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Henry Willmott of Darley, miner, aged around 70, deposed that there existed the right to build coes [coe - a small stone cabin built over the mine shaft] along with the right of free mining and this is why lot and cope was paid. [Lot, a mineral duty paid by the miner to the lord of the liberty to search for and mine ore. Cope, a duty paid by the buyer of the ore to the lord of the liberty]; Richard Bateman of Hartington, yeoman, aged 72; Ottiwell Willimott of Darley, miner, aged 79; Anthony Berry of Matlock, miner, aged 56, recalls detailed description of mining law including the role of barmaster, length of meer, king's meer entitlement, all groves to be worked unless damped or drowned; Christopher Abell of Wirksworth, miner, aged around 50, recalls detailed description of mining rights; John Bramall of Darley, husbandman, aged around 71.
