Description

Short title: Earl of Shrewsbury v Sacheverell.

Plaintiffs: Gilbert [Talbot], Earl of Shrewsbury.

Defendants: Henry Sacheverell, Taylor, Carrington, Browne and Law.

Documents: examination of Henry Sacheverell concerning Snitterton, Derbyshire.

34 Eliz.

Examination of Henry Sacheverell, who refused to accept that he had any part in setting his tenants on the miners. He argued that there is no 'immemorial custom of mining in Snitterton and Wensley' but rather that it began 28 years ago [c. 1563] when his ancestor's barmaster allowed the miners to dig there. When asked whether he knew the 'ould and ancient custome' [old and ancient custom] of free mining and 'howe many thousands of poore people doe live uppon gettinge of ore within the [...] wapentake' he replied that he knows not of any such custom as is mentioned in the interrogatories neither how many poor people do live upon getting of ore within the said wapentake of Wirksworth.
