Description

Short title: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster v Tenants of Matlock.

Plaintiffs: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster

Defendants: Tenants of Matlock.

Documents: depositions concerning chantry lands Matlock, Derbyshire.

Taken 20 Eliz.

Deponents for defendants: John Walker of Matlock, labourer, aged 50 or thereabouts, deposed that he knows the lands listed in the interrogatory [house of William Lane, lands of Thomas Wood, lands of John Worman, land and house of Nicholas Clewbichs, lands of Lucy Smethley, land of Humphrey Madder, house and lands of Elizaebth Symson] and knows that they 'have bene heretofore Reputed and taken for Chantrye lands or church lands' [have been hitherto reputed and taken for chantry or church lands]. All the rents of the lands in question have been dedicated to maintaining the stipendiary of the priest, Sir Henry Northedge, 'for sayinge of or ladye's service in the churche of matlocke' [for saying of our lady's service in the church of Matlock]. He remembers Roger Walker who, for 40 years, was 'father' and 'clerk' of the parish church of Matlock and 'that he and Thomas his sone did make A boke of all the rents of the sayd lands and that he wth the churchwardeine did receive and gather the same rents of the sayd rented lands' [and that he and Thomas his son did make a book of all the rents of the said lands and that he with the churchwarden did receive and gather the same rents of the said rented lands]; William Barker of Darley, tailor, aged 50 or thereabouts; Thomas Walker of Matlock, husbandman, aged 68 or thereabouts, deposed that Roger Walker, his father, was parish clerk for 40 years 'or thereabouts', [does not know whether his father recorded these lands in question] 'he thinketh that he hath wrytten A boke of the rents of the same lands call the pyshe lands but whether he wryte the same pte of the boke wch was shewed hym by some of the commyssyoners was of his owne hand wrytinge and some prte thereof he knoweth not who wrytte itte' [he thinks that he hath written a book of rents of the same lands called the parish lands but whether he write the same parte of the book which was showed him by some of his own hand writing and same part thereof he knows not who wrote it].
